Log and Line started as a sort of pseudonym when I was nervous about leaving behind my “respectable” university and international teaching career for a life repairing and restoring wooden boats. I was still teaching remotely while enrolled at IYRS and I didn’t want my students to be able to google my name and find out I was doing this weird thing—I guess I thought they’d think less of me if they learned I wasn’t purely an academic. Glad I got over that nonsense.

Today, Log and Line is a website and blog in which I document my descent into a life of craft. Where I thought, when I enrolled at IYRS, that I was setting myself up for a narrowly-focused life as a wooden boat carpenter, I have discovered that it is craftsmanship itself that interests me as much as any one craft pursuit. While I am now back to paying my bills primarily as a classroom teacher, I find myself still invested in developing both deeper and broader craft knowledge. To that end I’ve rented some shop space in San Francisco’s Bayview district and have set up a tiny business building furniture and offering education consulting and shop management services. Whatever the medium, I find myself driven to learn as much as I can and to approach projects with the attitude and ethic of a craftsperson. So, my education continues, as it probably will forever.
