This is the story of a new life, one shaving at a time

From universities in the American West, to the classrooms of an elite private academy in Santiago, Chile, to a public school in the Sierra de Guadarrama north of Madrid, Spain, to a boatbuilding school in New England, to a waterfront shop in Sausalito, California. After more than ten years spent studying and teaching writing and literature around the world, I decided to undertake a new kind of adventure: making a life as a craftsperson. To that end, I moved my teaching career online and enrolled in the Boatbuilding and Restoration program at IYRS in Newport, Rhode Island. After two years in IYRS’s Restoration Hall, I came to California to take a job at the Spaulding Marine Center, a funky little boatshop and community center in Sausalito. Several years and a global pandemic later and I’m back in the classroom while also running a small business as a custom furniture maker and technical education consultant.
